From childhood stories of Patagonia and unforgettable nights on a penguin-filled island to driving the legendary Carretera Austral through glaciers, fjords, and rainforest, Christian shares what makes this region so special. Jackie and Christian talk about the power of traveling with local guides, leaving room for spontaneity, and how Patagonia has a way of shaping your journey in unexpected ways.
They also explore how travelers can combine experiences across Chile—from the vast wilderness of Patagonia to the surreal landscapes of the Atacama Desert—and why slowing down and connecting with locals can transform a trip into something far more meaningful than simply checking places off a list.

We traveled to Torres del Paine National Park in Chile to hike the famous W Trek, expecting breathtaking scenery, fierce weather, and a real physical challenge. We found all of that—but we also discovered that some of the most meaningful parts of the journey had nothing to do with the miles we covered.
Along the way, we met fellow hikers Tisca Chandaria from London and Natalia Poskrebysheva from Amsterdam. What began as chance encounters on the trail quickly turned into genuine friendship as we shared meals, stories, laughter, and the ups and downs of life in Patagonia. In a place where everyone is pushed by the wind, the distance, and the unpredictability of each day, strangers can become friends faster than you’d expect.
In this episode, we reflect on the beauty and difficulty of Patagonia, the lessons that come from doing hard things, and the way adventure has a surprising way of bringing people together. Join us for a conversation about resilience, connection, and the kind of friendships that can only be formed when you step out of your routine and into the unknown.
Andrew takes us on a journey through his transformation from corporate professional to passionate architect of life-changing travel experiences. He describes that pivotal moment standing at the edge, heart pounding, knees shaking, and ultimately jumping, and how that single act of courage made him ask: if I can do this, what else am I capable of? That question sparked a sabbatical, a 35-day solo hike across the Camino de Santiago, a bicycle journey over the Alps, and ultimately the birth of Pygmy Elephant in 2015.
In this episode, we explore the profound philosophy behind the Pygmy Elephant name, the idea that small trips can have an overarching impact on your life, the unique self-guided adventures the company offers across Patagonia, the Tour du Mont Blanc, Scotland, the Dolomites, and beyond, and how Andrew's business has become a bridge between travelers and the transformative power of nature. Join us for a deep and moving conversation about finding meaning through movement, building a business from the ground up with nothing but grit and passion, and what it truly means to err on the side of adventure.more

What This Episode Covers
• Understanding Patagonia
Chris opens with an overview of Patagonia’s geography, the island of Tierra del Fuego, and the immense glaciated landscapes that define this southernmost corner of South America. Unlike large-ship cruises, this expedition cruise stays almost entirely below the South American continent, weaving through rugged, isolated islands.

I am joined by my friend Ellen Guidera, from the owning family of Refugia Chiloé. This beautiful lodge blends contemporary design with local craft, and offers days spent exploring quiet islands by wooden boat, tasting seafood pulled straight from the sea, and soaking up landscapes that genuinely lift your spirit.
Ellen and I chat about the folklore of Chiloé, its UNESCO listed treasures, the power of art and nature to boost happiness, and the behind the scenes stories that make Refugio so special.

We discuss the best times to travel to Patagonia, the issue of over-tourism, and the different entry points into the region. We explore the landscapes and attractions of Patagonia's Argentine and Chilean sides, including the Peninsula Valdes, Welsh Patagonia, Los Glaciares National Park, and the Lake District. Patagonia can be expensive, but we mention the affordability of travelling by bus in the region and highlight the Tren del Fin del Mundo, the southernmost railway on earth, and travelling by boat in Chile to reach Patagonia.
Shafik talked us through his previous travels to the region when he visited Ushuaia, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and Antarctica. Shafik has travelled in the region for the last two decades and was based in Buenas Aires for a year in his younger days. He is an expert in the region, and I am so glad to get his thoughts on Patagonia. Thanks, Shafik, for coming to the show; we will get that hat trick in!
Takeaways
• Patagonia is a vast region spanning the southern halves of Argentina and Chile, known for its dramatic landscapes and wilderness.
• The best times to visit Patagonia are spring + autumn to avoid the peak summer crowds.
• Overtourism is a concern in popular spots like Torres del Paine.
• Comfortable buses offer amenities like meals + entertainment.
• The End of the World Train in Ushuaia, Argentina, was built by convict labour + is now a tourist attraction.
• Ushuaia is the main port for ships to Antarctica, and visiting Antarctica is a popular tourist activity.
• Cordoba, Argentina's second city, is known for its beautiful architecture, universities, and surrounding natural attractions.
• Travelling independently in Patagonia is possible with some planning, and the public transport network is reliable.
• Train travel in Europe is a great way to explore the continent.

- Kris Tompkins
Kris Tompkins has spent a lifetime fighting tooth and nail to protect wild lands. In
1993, she stepped down as CEO of outdoor apparel brand Patagonia, and moved
to the edge of a windswept road-less fjord in the northern end of Patagonian
Chile with her late husband Doug Tompkins (the founder of North Face).
There, they began to dream up one of the most audacious conservation visions
ever conceived. It would culminate, more than 25 years later, in the largest private
land donation in history, the creation of one of the most spectacular national parks
in the world and the launch of the wildest road trip on the planet: the Route of
Parks. This story is about the realization of that vision.
But it’s also a story about wild nature, and living a wild life. Bruce Chatwin called
Patagonia: “The furthest place to which Man has walked from his place of Origin.”
Patagonia is one of the world’s last frontiers, a place where your fantasies of
adventure are dwarfed by the staggering immensity on every bend.
Kris’s story will inspire you connect more deeply with the planet, fight for what
you believe in, and explore the jagged spires and turquoise rivers of the Route of
Parks for yourself.
"There is no question that when you put yourself out into these very extreme
circumstances, or places on earth, you are changed for the rest of your life. And
half the time, you can't explain in any language, what's happened to you. And
I think that's actually a good sign, because you're seeing things through a lens
that's so raw that it brings out genes in us that are most ancient, the most
fundamental. And that's why I like it so much, because I don't really want to have a
simple life. I'm not interested in going on vacations and sitting by the sea … I like
to go to places that make you feel unbelievably tiny.”
CONNECT
Learn more about Kris and her work at Tompkins Conservation on their website,

called Patagonia National Park: Chile, and it includes essays and photos from Kris,

Patagonia ranks in my Top 3 of the 'Most Beautiful Places' I've seen (and I've been to 50 countries and all seven continents). The rugged granite mountains are often snow capped in glaciers lit up by the sun. Those same glaciers have turned its many lakes into stunning milky blue and teal oasis that defy description.
In Patagonia, you can hike one of most beautiful hikes in the world, the W-Trek including the French Valley and Grey Lake. You can also sea kayak around the icebergs and glacier in Grey Lake. On our trip, we also got in some amazing biking when we were over on the Argentinian side after we hiked and checked out the gorgeous Perito Moreno glacier. We spent some time eating and exploring the fun gateway cities of Puerto Morales, Punta Arenas, El Chaltan, and El Calafate.
In this Part I, we hike the stunningly beautiful W-Trek in Chile [ 49.7 miles / 80 km · Total Elevation Gain: 8,956 ft / 2,730 ] over the course of four days, all the way to glacial Lake Grey. We stay in refugios, where we also get a hot and tasty breakfast and dinner each night.
