From childhood stories of Patagonia and unforgettable nights on a penguin-filled island to driving the legendary Carretera Austral through glaciers, fjords, and rainforest, Christian shares what makes this region so special. Jackie and Christian talk about the power of traveling with local guides, leaving room for spontaneity, and how Patagonia has a way of shaping your journey in unexpected ways.
They also explore how travelers can combine experiences across Chile—from the vast wilderness of Patagonia to the surreal landscapes of the Atacama Desert—and why slowing down and connecting with locals can transform a trip into something far more meaningful than simply checking places off a list.

What This Episode Covers
• Understanding Patagonia
Chris opens with an overview of Patagonia’s geography, the island of Tierra del Fuego, and the immense glaciated landscapes that define this southernmost corner of South America. Unlike large-ship cruises, this expedition cruise stays almost entirely below the South American continent, weaving through rugged, isolated islands.

Today they tell all as we find out what kinds of adventures and major misadventures they got into throughout Central America, and why they now have their sights set in an entirely new direction. Our conversation flows from traveling with a dog, to balancing home life and camper travel, to the chaos and beauty of life on the road, vehicle issues, interacting with locals, the importance of slow travel, and how travel affects us all individually and uniquely through different times of our lives. Chris and Sara are podcast hosts of What No One Tells You and YouTubers who share their travel experiences—the beautiful, the not so great, and even the near death—and how they get through the hard things and keep going with smiles on their faces.

In this episode, we meet Kate and Kimberly, two adventurous travelers who swapped rushed vacations for a months-long slow travel journey across Europe and Latin America. And trust us—it's not just about beautiful views (though there are plenty of those).
They share with Crystal Hammond and Joe Saul-Sehy what it's really like to:
• Roam the winding streets of Venice, Florence, and Cinque Terre without a rigid plan
• Embrace the unexpected—from Christmas markets in Austria to Carnival in Brazil
• Discover the rhythm of life in places like Guatemala, Argentina, and Portugal
• Balance remote work and travel without losing the magic (or the Wi-Fi)
• Say no to travel perfectionism and yes to getting gloriously lost
Along the way, they reflect on the challenges of long-term travel, the joy of lingering in one place, and why slowing down can lead to deeper cultural experiences—and better stories.
If you've ever wondered what it would be like to take your time, immerse yourself in a new place, and make the world feel just a little smaller… this episode is your passport.
Pack light, take your time, and come wander with us.

Why should you go to Ushuaia?
Naomi says, "I think it has the kind of status as one of those places that you go to, to say you've been to the most southern city in the world. But there's just so much more to see: glaciers, national parks, and a lot of history. The area has to offer that you can explore by spending a bit more time there. It's where the tail of the Andes meets the open ocean, and you get that final frontier feeling."
Naomi recommends a one-week itinerary for Ushuaia, Argentina, encompassing a variety of activities and dining experiences. Here's a summary of her suggested itinerary:
Day 1: Cruise the Beagle Channel
Activity: Embark on a boat tour of the Beagle Channel to observe sea lions and, during the summer months, penguins.
Recommended Operator: Patagonia Explorer.

We discuss the best times to travel to Patagonia, the issue of over-tourism, and the different entry points into the region. We explore the landscapes and attractions of Patagonia's Argentine and Chilean sides, including the Peninsula Valdes, Welsh Patagonia, Los Glaciares National Park, and the Lake District. Patagonia can be expensive, but we mention the affordability of travelling by bus in the region and highlight the Tren del Fin del Mundo, the southernmost railway on earth, and travelling by boat in Chile to reach Patagonia.
Shafik talked us through his previous travels to the region when he visited Ushuaia, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and Antarctica. Shafik has travelled in the region for the last two decades and was based in Buenas Aires for a year in his younger days. He is an expert in the region, and I am so glad to get his thoughts on Patagonia. Thanks, Shafik, for coming to the show; we will get that hat trick in!
Takeaways
• Patagonia is a vast region spanning the southern halves of Argentina and Chile, known for its dramatic landscapes and wilderness.
• The best times to visit Patagonia are spring + autumn to avoid the peak summer crowds.
• Overtourism is a concern in popular spots like Torres del Paine.
• Comfortable buses offer amenities like meals + entertainment.
• The End of the World Train in Ushuaia, Argentina, was built by convict labour + is now a tourist attraction.
• Ushuaia is the main port for ships to Antarctica, and visiting Antarctica is a popular tourist activity.
• Cordoba, Argentina's second city, is known for its beautiful architecture, universities, and surrounding natural attractions.
• Travelling independently in Patagonia is possible with some planning, and the public transport network is reliable.
• Train travel in Europe is a great way to explore the continent.

But in this week’s episode, we’re exploring two regions in Argentina that most travelers miss: El Impenetrable National Park in the north and Patagonia Azul in the south.
These places are relatively unfrequented in large part because, up until a few years ago, there really wasn’t an easy way for travelers to access them. Last year, Afar deputy editor Tim Chester traveled with outfitter Journeys With Purpose to explore the nascent tourism industry in both destinations, thanks to the efforts of Rewilding Argentina and Tompkins Conservation.
As you’ll hear in the episode, Kris and the late Doug Tompkins have spent decades preserving land in Chile and Argentina. (If the names seem familiar, Kris was a CEO at Patagonia, and Doug founded the North Face.) Over the years, the couple acquired hundreds of thousands of acres in both countries and turned them into national parks before donating it all to the Chilean and Argentine governments. The teams that run the parks have reintroduced endangered species, including panthers and sea otters, and allowed the land to recover from years of abuse—essentially rewilding wide swaths of the countries. And now, the parks are open to travelers.
Tim is kind of our environmental guru here at Afar and has covered the concept of rewilding quite a bit, but this was the first chance he had to see the work up close and personal. His trip was muddy, adventurous, and just a little bit life-changing.

Patagonia ranks in my Top 3 of the 'Most Beautiful Places' I've seen (and I've been to 50 countries and all seven continents). The rugged granite mountains are often snow capped in glaciers lit up by the sun. Those same glaciers have turned its many lakes into stunning milky blue and teal oasis that defy description.
In Patagonia, you can hike one of most beautiful hikes in the world, the W-Trek including the French Valley and Grey Lake. You can also sea kayak around the icebergs and glacier in Grey Lake. On our trip, we also got in some amazing biking when we were over on the Argentinian side after we hiked and checked out the gorgeous Perito Moreno glacier. We spent some time eating and exploring the fun gateway cities of Puerto Morales, Punta Arenas, El Chaltan, and El Calafate.
In this Part I, we hike the stunningly beautiful W-Trek in Chile [ 49.7 miles / 80 km · Total Elevation Gain: 8,956 ft / 2,730 ] over the course of four days, all the way to glacial Lake Grey. We stay in refugios, where we also get a hot and tasty breakfast and dinner each night.

We also discuss the city's climate and the surprising cold weather that we encountered during our visit. Despite the unseasonably cold weather, we still managed to get out for some adventures! Our adventures included a visit to the Cerro Campanario viewpoint, drives along the scenic Circuito Chico, and hiking excursions. We also mention some of the numerous restaurants and breweries that we enjoyed, including a high tea experience at Hotel Llao Llao. Despite some challenges, such as inclement weather and illness, we highly recommend Bariloche for its beauty, food, and family-friendly atmosphere, and can’t wait to go back! Enjoy!more
