Plus, we'll talk about the growing problem of anti-tourism in some destinations. We'll chat with an analyst from a company called Riskline on why we're seeing a tourism backlash and destinations that are trying to balance the need for tourism versus too many tourists. This isn't just your run-of-the-mill, sports-crazed city, however. The love of hockey here runs much deeper. It's tied to both the history of the game's creation as well as the identity of the Quebecois people, who've come to see their hometown team as a powerful symbol of their nationhood, even though they're still officially part of Canada.
On this episode of Far From Home -- which I originally reported for Here and There, a Canadian Geographic travel podcast -- I visit Montreal where I attend a game amid 20,000 cheering fans, and I even take my own hockey lesson. By the end of my trip, it's clear that what started out as a simple sports story is actually about something much deeper and more meaningful.
Thanks to Liz Beatty and Black Cabin Studios for permission to share this story with the Far From Home audience. Thanks also to Clark McLeod, Mario Lambert, Emma Jacobs, Tourism Montreal, Destination Canada, and Excellent Ice.
On Far From Home, award-winning public radio journalist Scott Gurian reports fascinating stories from faraway places like Iran, Chernobyl, and Mongolia. For more info, visit farfromhomepodcast.orgmore

Sometimes things just work out and this happened to be the case with Boban Chaldovich, a Montreal based bikepacker with nearly 30 years' experience of bike travel. It just so happened that Boban was cycling home from Toronto, after a 6500km bikepacking trip in the Balkans, Colombia and Mexico. Having cycled over 100,000km since the mid-90's it was really exciting to have a chance to sit back, hear about some of his early travels, talk bikes and even pause the episode mid-way through just so I could go look at his setup once again. I hope you all enjoy listening to this episode as much as I did recording it.

With an elevation gain of approximately 16,000m, but more realistically closer to 20,000m, this route incorporates as much singletrack and forest roads as possible, while also giving opportunities to rest while crushing some rail trail.
