Buckle up, Adventurer — this episode of Stacking Adventures takes you along for a whirlwind 26-day journey across Europe and beyond. Hosts Crystal Hammond and Joe Saul-Sehy sit down with globetrotter Jon to unpack the highs, lows, and priceless lessons from his epic family sabbatical — a trip that covered Germany, England, France, Iceland, and Turkey in one unforgettable run.
From castles and cathedrals to kebabs and cold plunges, we explore how John made the most of every stop — and how he paid for it all with smart use of credit card points and travel hacking. You'll hear how he balanced logistics, teenage moods, and must-see sites, plus the reality of making tough choices when time is short. Along the way, Crystal and Joe share their own favorite moments (and mishaps) that prove the best travel stories come from the unexpected.
Whether you're planning a multi-country itinerary or just dreaming about one, this episode is packed with insights to help you make it happen. Because the world is too big — and too delicious — to see one country at a time.
What You'll Learn
• Points and perks: How Jon leveraged rewards programs to cut costs on flights, hotels, and transportation.
• Must-see stops: Insider tips on what to do (and skip) in places like Bath, Mont Saint-Michel, and Iceland's Golden Circle.
• Teen-tested strategies: How to plan a trip that keeps the whole family engaged without overloading the itinerary.
• One-bag travel secrets: Why packing light might be the smartest decision you make before you even leave home.
• Quick-hit destinations: Creative ways to maximize short stays in countries like Turkey and Iceland.
Questions to Explore
• If you had 26 days to see multiple countries, how would you prioritize your stops?
• What's the one travel splurge you'd never skip, even on a budget trip?
• Could you live out of a single bag for a month — or do you need that extra pair of shoes?

In this episode, I'm sharing our one-week Germany itinerary with kids—complete with budget tips, hotel recommendations, and must-see stops for families. We started with an overnight train from Brussels to Berlin, explored Berlin's highlights, and visited important Martin Luther sites in Wittenberg, Eisleben, and Eisenach (including the Castle Church and Wartburg Castle).
From there, we spent three nights on the Romantic Road with kids, stopping in Würzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen, and Augsburg—plus I share my favorite family-friendly hotel picks along the way. We ended our trip in Füssen to see Neuschwanstein Castle, walk a treetop trail, and take a day trip to Eibsee and the Zugspitze cable car.
Whether you're dreaming of castles, charming towns, or unique adventures like taking an overnight train, this episode is full of family travel tips, budget advice, and a kid-friendly Germany itinerary you can replicate.

I was nine years old and yes, this trip had an enormous impact on my life - I'm sure you wouldn't be listening to this podcast today if Van Life 1985 hadn't taken place! Throughout the series, I'll include chats recorded with my Dad this year, extracts from my late Mum's travel diary from 1985, and of course my own memories and thoughts.
In this episode, we move on to spend time in Germany, a country that would become very important in my future life. We bypassed Munich, visited the Black Forest, Baden Baden and Heidelberg, and spent time staying with friends near Frankfurt, where my sister and I especially enjoyed the flying fox play equipment in a local path. Belgium featured very briefly in our trip and we then carried on to the Netherlands, enjoying a cheese market in Alkmaar and a canal cruise in Amsterdam.
A big thanks to Context Travel for sponsoring this series, and an even bigger thanks to my Dad for agreeing to be part of it.
