After receiving a life-altering diagnosis of a brain tumor in 2018, Risa faced a choice that would define her future: to retreat into fear or to embrace life with renewed purpose. She chose the latter, transforming from a rigid perfectionist into someone who lives fully in each moment.
Risa takes us on a journey through her transformation from accomplished athlete to someone facing an uncertain medical future, and ultimately to a woman who refused to let a brain tumor (affectionately named Bubba) define her limits. She describes that pivotal moment sitting on her worn-out couch in gray sweatpants, realizing this was no way to live, and making the decision to pursue her lifelong dream of cycling 1,800 miles from Canada to Mexico along the Pacific Coast. That decision sparked what would become a six-week journey of physical challenge, emotional healing, and profound self-discovery.
In this episode, we explore the power of choosing how we respond to life's obstacles, the unexpected companionship that can come from accepting rather than fighting our circumstances, and how Risa's cycling journey became a vessel for transformation. Join us for a deep and moving conversation about finding strength in vulnerability, learning to ask "what can I do?" instead of dwelling on limitations, and what it truly means to live life on your own terms, one pedal stroke at a time.more

Download our Itinerary to follow our same route in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
It is one of Colorado’s four National Parks and is Colorado’s least visited national park. It is in western Colorado, not far from the Utah Border. The Canyon is a deep, steep-walled gorge carved through Precambrian rock by the Gunnison River.
There are two main sections of the park, the more remote North Rim and the more popular South Rim, both have views of the canyon's dramatic drops and the striated Painted Wall cliff. There is another section called East Portal, which is a steep road that descends to the river. The park was named for its cliffs that are often darkened by shadows, making the walls appear black. The canyon itself is so vertical that the Gunnison River drops an average of 43 feet per mile, and 240 feet per mile at its steepest point at Chasm View, making some of the steepest mountain descents in North America.
Episode Highlights:
• Tips for visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
• Best hikes and view points on the North Rim
• Best hikes and view points on the South Rim
• Driving down the East Portal
• Where to stay in Crawford (The Hitching Post Hotel and Farm Store or The Stone House Inn)
• Where to stay in Montrose (The Rathbone Hotel or Fairfield by Marriott)
• Items to pack: reusable utensils, tripod, and mini travel umbrella
When is the best time to visit Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park?
This national park is best seen from May- September. During the winter the north rim shuts down completely and the south rim is only open to the visitor center.
If you are going to visit this park, you'll also want to visit Mesa Verde National Park. Listen to our episode for details before you go!

In this episode, Crystal and Joe welcome Darrow Kirkpatrick — retired financial writer, seasoned adventurer, and author of Two Sticks, One Path. Darrow takes us along his trek across the Colorado Trail, sharing lessons that will inspire your own outdoor adventures, whether you're planning a weekend hike or a multi-week expedition.
From practical packing strategies to mindset shifts that keep you moving when the trail gets tough, you'll walk away with tools to make your next hike safer, lighter, and more rewarding. We'll explore how to prepare your body for long-distance trekking, choose gear that works for you (not against you), and stay safe when wildlife or weather take an unexpected turn.
You'll also hear the story behind a near-moose encounter, what the Colorado Trail taught Darrow about resilience, and how his "Gear of the Day" pick could change the way you pack forever.
In this episode, you'll discover:
• How to choose lightweight gear without sacrificing comfort or safety
• Training strategies that prepare you for elevation, distance, and endurance challenges
• Smart ways to handle unpredictable weather in the mountains
• Essential gear for water purification on the trail
• How to navigate wildlife encounters with confidence and caution
• Packing tips that help you avoid overloading while still being ready for anything
• Why mental preparation is just as important as physical conditioning for long hikes
• An "adventure-approved" Gear of the Day you might not see coming

Starting from Denver and trekking through various terrains and countries, he details his experiences, challenges, and the remarkable people he met along the way. Jacob discusses his transition from an aerospace engineer to an adventurer, camping in the most unusual places and confronting nature's extremes. He speaks about his encounters with different cultures, from Russia to South America, and the lessons learned on endurance and solitude. Post-adventure, Jacob's life took a turn towards creativity, leading him to build artistic ant farms and more recently, to guide e-bike tours in Colorado. He's also created a podcast called, "How to Move the Stars", a day-by-day retelling of his bicycle ride twice around the world. He emphasizes how the journey changed his worldview and his approach to life's challenges, offering insights that go beyond just the physical feat of cycling across the globe.

But after more than a century of trapping and habitat loss, wolverines in the lower 48 today exist only as small, fragmented populations in Idaho, Montana, Washington, Wyoming, and northeast Oregon.
However, there's soon to be an effort in Colorado to help the carnivores recover in that state. The Colorado legislature has been considering legislation calling for the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Agency to move ahead with a recovery plan for wolverines. The bill is expected to face its final legislative hurdle in the coming weeks.
To discuss this initiative, we're joined today by Megan Mueller, a conservation biologist with Rocky Mountain Wild, a non-profit advocacy organization working to bring them back, and Elaine Leslie, who was Chief of Biological Resources for the National Park Service before retiring.more
