Elaine Sciolino is a veteran journalist and author, former Paris bureau chief for The New York Times, and the writer of several books about France, including The Seine, The Only Street in Paris, and Adventures in the Louvre. She has lived in Paris for over two decades and brings history, culture, and personal insight into every story.
Elaine joins co-host Paige McClanahan to explore Adventures in the Louvre: How to Fall in Love with the World’s Greatest Museum, diving into the history, hidden artworks, and practical strategies for making the most of your visit.
You’ll hear why the Louvre is more than just a building with the Mona Lisa and how its role in French history makes it extraordinary. Elaine demystifies visiting the museum, from understanding crowds and lines to discovering lesser-known works like Titian’s Man With a Glove and what she calls the “undiscovered Mona Lisa.” She shares crowd-beating strategies, best days and times to visit, and surprising places within and around the Louvre where peace and beauty await. You’ll get insider stories on heists, hidden collections, and how even children can be captivated by Egyptology and Islamic art sections that most tourists miss out on.
When you visit a major museum like the Louvre, do you tend to focus on the most famous works, or do you prefer to explore what’s less obvious? I’d love to hear your thoughts, and I hope you’ll share by sending me an audio message.
Co-host Paige McClanahan is a writer, editor, and former journalist based in Paris, France. As the author of “The New Tourist: Waking up to the Power and Perils of Travel”, Paige is passionate about making sure our travels have a positive impact on the world. Learn more about her work here.

Rick shares his real-time, fast-paced itinerary, starting with a sunset stroll through Luxembourg Gardens and Saint-Sulpice Church—a hidden gem with stunning art and history. The next morning, he kicks off at Trocadéro with a croissant, soaking in Eiffel Tower views before diving into a walking marathon that includes the Louvre Courtyard, Notre-Dame, and a riverside picnic at Square du Vert-Galant. No stuffy museums or endless lines here—just smart choices, like visiting the Musée de Rodin (no crowds!) and ending with Monet's Water Lilies at the Musée de l'Orangerie after dark. Annie adds her signature tips: where to skip the queues, how to navigate like a local, and why comfortable shoes are your best friend.
You'll hear how Rick logged 32,000 steps, dodged Paris traffic (Olympic prep chaos!), and still found time for ice cream at Berthillon, a Seine River cruise with wine, and a late-night crêpe. Spoiler: His secret weapon? A mix of walking, strategic Ubers, and knowing which attractions stay open late. Annie also reveals her favorite off-the-beaten-path spots, like the Courre de Commerce alleyway, and why the Batobus river taxi might just save your tired feet.
Perfect for travelers with tight schedules, this episode proves you don't need a week to fall in love with Paris—just a well-planned day, a charged phone, and a sense of adventure. Rick's story is packed with practical advice, from ordering food in French (even badly!) to avoiding taxi scams at the airport. Plus, Annie's magazine segment dishes on what French presidents actually eat—hint: it's not all foie gras!

It's reported that nine items from the crown jewel collection were taken from the Louvre.

So what are the secrets of the Louvre that most visitors miss?
In this episode, Sean and Brandon uncover the unbelievable true stories behind the world’s most famous museum—from the medieval fortress buried in its basement to the daring curator who smuggled 4,000 paintings out of Nazi-occupied Paris. You’ll learn how Napoleon crowned himself emperor in front of a captive pope, why the pyramid sparked satanic rumors, and how Catherine de’ Medici’s hitman might still haunt the Tuileries Gardens.
This is the episode where Uncle Bob walks away knowing:
• The Louvre opened in 1793—during the Reign of Terror
• Thousands of artworks were hidden before the Nazis arrived
• The glass pyramid has 673, not 666, panes of glass
• Catherine de’ Medici’s ghostly “Red Man” still stalks the gardens
• The Mona Lisa only became famous after being stolen

Best Stay Jeuneurs
There are affordable apartment-style options for larger families, and it looks to be in a great location (about a 20-minute walk from the Louvre).
Crowne Plaza Paris Republique
Truth be told, I almost booked this hotel. I'm a big fan of IHG and have stayed in IHG hotels in Belgium and Scotland. Both were wonderful experiences. They have rooms that fit families of 5 or 6, and breakfast options, too. I really liked the location, but it was just slightly more expensive than the hotel we booked.

…Let's visit the Louvre with author Elaine Sciolino. Today, we chat about her upcoming book Adventures in the Louvre: How to Fall in Love with the World's Greatest Museum. The book pulls back the curtain on a building many think they know, but which still contains endless secrets and untold stories.
And if you think you recognise Elaine's name and voice, perhaps you heard her on the pod before! Elaine, the former Paris bureau chief for The New York Times, has featured The Earful Tower in the past discussing her books about the Seine River and the Rue des Martyrs. In fact, she was the second-ever guest on the show, back in 2017.
Elaine used her extensive experience as a reporter to influence how she wrote this book. She decided the best approach was to explain the Louvre museum "through the prism of someone who's not an art historian and who's not a tour guide. I decided to just report the Louvre and talk to everybody that I possibly could."
And, my goodness, the surprises Elaine uncovered will knock your socks off: spending the day with the museum's permanent on-site fire fighters, a secret World War Two bunker and long-forgotten graffiti inscribed by the builders of the Philippe Auguste wall.
For Louvre novices who are in danger of having an exhausting and frustrating experience trying to see and do everything, Elaine offers this advice "Find your Louvre identity, find what kind of a visitor you are… And once you decide that it makes it a lot easier, because you forgive yourself for not being perfect…You go each time with a different identity, like you go each time and discover a different work of art."
Elaine confesses that she wasn't always the biggest fan of the museum, "the Louvre is a challenge, it's too big…it's too crowded, it's an impossible museum. You have to find your way in. So that's what I tried to do." Having visited the building hundreds of times in the course of writing the book, I wondered if Elaine was all Louvre-d out or did she intend to go back? "Oh no, I have to go back. I have to keep going back."
Adventures in the Louvre: How to Fall in Love with the World's Greatest Museum is released on 1 April 2025. You can pre-order it here.
A fun extra the end of the episode, Bertrand d'Aleman from My Private Paris tells us about a current exhibition at the museum: The Louvre Couture. This is an exploration of how the vast breadth of decorative art contained within the walls of the museum has informed the world of high fashion. The Louvre Couture exhibition runs from 24 January - 21 July. Book your tickets here.
Artwork mentioned in this episode: Mona Lisa (also known as La Joconde) by Leonardo da Vinci; Man with a glove by Titian, Portrait of a Man (also known as La Condottiere) by Antonello da Messina; The death of Marat by Jacques-Louis David. Thanks to Hannah Coyle for additional reporting.

This cool, new micro-distillery is located on a quiet street, with a macabre history, mere steps from the Louvre museum in the 1st arrondissement. We visited their stunning workshop and listened as Charlotte explained the evolution of the gin culture in France.
Offering excellent quality gin, as well as tastings and workshops, it's clear that Charlotte and her colleagues take gin seriously. Of course, wine is the dominant beverage here, but, as Charlotte explains, things are changing.
"I think gin is taking over the world! Often French people are set in their ways, so we are a little behind everywhere else, but it's starting here in France. I think it's really exciting."
This craft-distillery is such an exciting addition to the Paris mixology scene, comfortably co-existing alongside the more traditional emblems. As Charlotte says "wine will always be there, but we're just making the drink culture richer." We couldn't agree more.
La Distillerie de l'Arbre Sec address: 52 Rue de l'Arbre Sec, 75001
